Bowled is one of those restaurants that’s hard to judge from the outside. Tampa Bay On Demand’s Dining Out reporter Mike Reeves tried out the St. Petersburg eatery for lunch recently.

Creative Loafing Tampa: Bowled Restaurant Review
You can put anything on a plate, except soup, but a bowl evokes a profound sense of comfort. Hands cupped around an offering. Birds’ nests. That Campbell’s commercial with the thawing snowman kid. A packed pipe. And although Bowled makes some fine grub, the overall effect is more about good, hearty food at a good price than fine dining from a bowl.

Best comfort food
The most comforting foods are those served in deep bowls, wafting steam. It was a rough year, we needed a little comfort, and two new restaurants were emphatically up to the task. Michael Cecere's new Bowled Restaurant adopts a pan-global approach to one-dish meals, served, yes, in bowls. From a spicy red curry to a suave bouillabaisse, it's affordable, consoling and still stylish.
Bowled, a new casual restaurant in St. Petersburg, hits the right notes
...Cecere and staff are doing dozens of things right. Service is warm and efficient, moms and their toddlers feeling just as welcomed as business lunchers. The interior is cheery, with a caramel-chocolate-black color scheme, comfortable booths and easy-wipe tables.
I jumped the gun a little bit, my first visit while chef Matt Cummings (formerly at Cafe Ponte) was still getting his bearings. He seemed to have hit his stride on my second visit, impressive since the menu globe-trots all over the place, loosely organized by dishes that you can serve in bowls.
The New Bowled Gets a Strike!
Bowled is a nouveaux cuisine bistro whose menu is as eclectic as it is tasty. The name comes from the fact that one of its main menu sections is a sampling of great dishes all served in large bowls.
